It's back to school time. School busses will be rolling down our streets to take kids back to the classroom. And we all need to remember to do our part to make sure our children get to and from school safely.
First remember it is a state law that you have to stop when children are loading onto or off busses. If you see the buss's stop signs out and safety lights flashing, you should stop. A new law that is in effect this year, called Nathan's Law, results in large fines for anyone driving around a stopped school bus.
Secondly, make sure you are extra careful around school zones and that you follow the posted speed limit. Always be on the lookout for a child who might suddenly dart out in front of you. While there are crossing guards posted at many schools, there are some that will not have guards this year.
Finally if you see a school bus trying to merge into traffic, please be courteous and give the bus the right-of-way. Remember school busses are carrying precious cargo, our children.
