PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

A Columbus woman was killed Tuesday morning in a single-car accident.

Phenix City police say Elise Lauren Hornsby, 21, was traveling westbound on Highway 80, near the Summerville Road exit, when the car she was driving drifted off the road and struck a guardrail.

A passerby spotted the accident on the side of the road and called 911.

Investigators told News Leader 9 she was thrown about 20 feet from her 2001 Hyundai Tiburon.

Coroner Arthur Sumbry, Jr., said Hornsby died of blunt force trauma and was not wearing a seatbelt. He added that she was pronounced dead around 5:30 a.m.

Police do not suspect foul play, but they are trying to determine what factors may have contributed to the accident.

Hornsby was a student at Columbus State University. She would have been a junior this fall, majoring in communications.
