Gulfport's Brittney Reese advances to Olympic finals

Today Gulfport native Brittney Reese, 25, jumped 6.57 meters in the Olympic women's long jump qualifying round entering her into the finals.

The former Ole Miss All-American is a four-time world champion. Reese won the 2012 World Indoor long jump title in Istanbul, Turkey and broke the American Indoor record once held by Jackie Joyner-Kersee.

She attended Pass Road Elementary School and Gulfport High School. Reese played basketball for two seasons at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College before transferring to the University of Mississippi.

This year she established the World Indoor Championship record by clearing 7.23 meters.

She'll be one of 12 athletes to compete in the ladies long jump finals. The finals will be Wednesday at 2:05 p.m.

During the final round, the 12 athletes have three initial jumps. The top eight athletes will perform three more jumps and the athlete who jumps the furthest wins.
