After watching Devin Smith in practice... you can see why Hancock head coach Rocky Gaudin is so high on the young man. He's a leader, someone who motivates his teammates. With a heat index of over 100 degrees, Devin was giving his all, trying to get his mind and body prepared for the 2012 season.
Smith said, "I play with a lot of heart. Play with a lot of determination. I just play as hard as I can, try to make every tackle I can and play for my team."
You would think he would tone it down in kicking drills... not so. He aggressively broke through the line and blocked the kick.
Coach Gaudin says the 6-foot-3, 270 pound senior has a bright future in the college ranks.
"He's been to a lot of camps this summer and a lot of schools have shown interest, "Gaudin said. He added, "Where he shakes out in the end depends on what type of season he has and his grades are fine."
Smith isn't on the radar of many Division One schools... but when the season kicks off and college scouts watch the Hawks in action... big# 58 will be penciled in. In 2011 Devin made 86 tackles and 8 sacks. Look at this big hit he made against Biloxi.
"I've set a bunch of goals for myself, " Smith stated. "I just want to be the best at my position in the whole coast. I want to go to college and play college football and I want to go on a football scholarship. I just play every down like it's my last."
Smith knows exactly what makes him a top notch player.
He stated, "My strength. Definitely my strength and my speed. I run a 4.9 forty.
Devin says he would love to sign a football scholarship with Southern Miss.
