WLOX Editorial: An injustice occurred in Crystal Springs

Posted: Updated:

Unfortunately many in our country are hearing news reports that Mississippi is still a racist state. This comes after an African American couple was denied permission to be married at the First Baptist Church in Crystal Springs.

Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson were scheduled to be married in the church, but at the last moment they were told by the minister that some of the congregation didn't want the couple to marry in the church. This is wrong.

An injustice occurred in Crystal Springs. It shows that in 2012 we still have pockets of racial strife and prejudice in our state. But out of this bad situation there still may be some good to surface.

Some members of the Baptist Church in Crystal Springs have apologized to the Wilsons and the entire black community in Crystal Springs saying this should not have happened. One church member was quoted as saying, "we have been portrayed as a racist church, we're not. We welcome anybody that wants to come through those doors."

Just this week a Unity rally was held in downtown Crystal Springs bringing all races together to discuss what happened and to hopefully bring some healing to the community. A good maxim for all to remember is W-W-J-D, What Would Jesus Do?!

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
