BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -
The tax free holiday got underway across Mississippi Friday morning and shoppers didn't waste any time heading to Edgewater Mall in Biloxi to take advantage of saving seven percent.
Regina Shipton waited until this weekend to bring her children back to school shopping. Shipton said, "I have two of them in college, my husband's in college, so anything you can save money now these days, you have got to save the money."
Even if that means fighting the crowds. "We are going to do it today (Friday), we don't want to come out Saturday, it will probably be a lot more crowded," Shipton said.
To prepare for the big crowds, store employees did some planning too.
Michele Martorana with Buckle said, "We get freight in Monday through Friday, so all of our freight is out. Yesterday we got 26 boxes of freight, so we do get extra freight during this time."
Bridget Johnson works for Charlotte Russe, she said, "We just try to make sure all our new merchandise is out, all our new styles and everything they will be looking for. We make sure we are replenished and everything is ready to go."
Along with saving seven percent on tax, most stores are having big sales. Signs outside the shops are luring in shoppers with buy one get one deals and even one store in the mall is offering 50-percent off everything.
Martorana said, "Last year for tax free weekend we about doubled our day, we are usually busy. It's anything under $100 and all our sales prices are an extra 15-percent off right now too."
Johnson said, "It's not as big as Black Friday, but it's starting to be something we definitely look forward to for sales and everything."
While employees noticed more shoppers in the mall Friday, they expect to ring up even more sales on Saturday.
Most clothes and shoes under 100 dollars are tax free, click here for a complete list. The tax free holiday ends Saturday at midnight.
