HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
The University of Southern Mississippi is taking a 100 year old building and turning it into a modern gem.
College Hall is being transformed into the new home of Mass Communications. It will house WUSM, The Student Printz, recording and photography studios, and computer labs.
The building will also be green with the latest energy technology. Southern Miss's Associate Director of Physical Plant, Joel Lucero says the current construction cost of the renovation is $4.4 million, but the benefit it will bring to the campus plus energy savings will out weigh the price tag.
"It's also the energy savings that we will be doing in this building. Previously, the building had an outdated mechanical system, as well as an electrical system. The electrical system that we are putting in there will consume 30 percent of the energy that it formally did. So, it is our hope that even though the price may seem expensive it is really not," said Lucero.
Lucero says construction should be complete by January 2013.
