GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A man accused of killing his father will have to come up with $1 million in cash to get out of jail. Edmond Reeves' bond was set during his initial court appearance Wednesday afternoon.

Deputies said Tuesday the 34-year-old shot his elderly father and tried to cover it up with a fire. It's a crime that's left the community in shock.

"You raise your children and you just don't know anymore what is going to happen, or what they are going to do to you," resident Bobbie Mason said.

"Everyone knows one another around here, and it is just terrible to hear news like that," resident Chris Williams said.

According to investigators, a 911 call came in about a mobile home fire. When deputies arrived minutes later, they found 75 year old Jarvis Reeves dead inside with a gunshot wound. While deputies were on the scene, Reeves' son, Edmond, reportedly showed up.

"At that point, we had received a tip that he was responsible for the fire and at that time he was detained," Public Information Officer Shonna Pierce said.

Investigators said Edmond has since confessed, but his motive is still a mystery.

"When someone is possibly under the influence of a narcotic, you really can't predict a behavior," Pierce said.

Edmond Reeves is no stranger to crime. Deputies said he also served time for vehicular manslaughter in Louisiana.

"It is real shocking for the community," resident Patsy Welford said.

As investigators continue to gather facts, people in this tight-knit community are praying this kind of tragedy won't happen again.

"George County is not used to this type of action going on."

Reeves is in the George County jail, charged with arson, murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
