(RNN) - Barely 11 days after the divorce papers were filed, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have settled out of court.

The couple - commonly referred to as TomKat - have signed an undisclosed settlement, according to a report by CNN. The couple have one child, Suri, age 6.

A joint statement prepared by a publicist says the couple are working in the best interest of their daughter, and asked for privacy.

"We are committed to working together as parents to accomplishing what is in our daughter Suri's best interests," the statement said. "We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents."

Holmes filed for divorce June 28 in New York, and asked for sole custody. An unnamed source told that Holmes was likely to be granted custody.

Sources say the divorce filing came as a surprise to Cruise, whose public persona has taken a hit during the past six years due to his erratic behavior and his commitment to the controversial Scientology religion.

Celebrity gossip websites have reported the religion is at the center of the Cruise-Holmes divorce. Holmes was raised Catholic.

According to TMZ, Cruise had asked for "significant and meaningful" visitation with Suri. Sources are reporting that Cruise is currently away shooting a movie.

Cruise - who celebrated his 50th birthday on July 2 - was one of Hollywood's most bankable stars for more than 25 years, beginning his career with a small part in the movie, Endless Love, in 1981. He received his big break in the movie Taps, and became a breakout star in Risky Business in 1983.

Over the next 30 years, Cruise starred in some of the most popular and biggest moneymakers in cinema history: The Outsiders, Top Gun, The Color of Money, Cocktail, Rainman, Days of Thunder, A Few Good Men, The Firm, Interview with a Vampire, Minority Report, The Last Samurai, Collateral, War of the Worlds and Tropic Thunder.

Cruise is a three-time Academy Award nominee for his roles in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia. He starred most recently as Stacee Jaxx in the movie adaptation of the Broadway play, Rock of Ages.

Holmes, 33, rose to fame through her role in the television series, Dawson's Creek, which ran from 1998 to 2003. She co-starred in the first installment of the Batman franchise reboot, Batman Begins. She most recently appeared with Adam Sandler in the movie, Jack and Jill in 2011. She also starred as Jackie Kennedy in the 2011 miniseries, The Kennedys.

It was Cruise's over-the-top reaction to his love for Holmes that inspired his now-infamous leap upon Oprah Winfrey's couch in 2005. The leap was met with revulsion from much of the public and media.

Cruise's career seemed to go into freefall, especially with the airing of a combative interview with Today show host Matt Lauer in which the actor called Lauer "glib."

The two were sparring over the benefits of psychiatry and anti-depressants, and whether Scientology was a more useful treatment for mental illness.

Cruise famously condemned actress Brooke Shields for treating her postpartum depression with anti-depressants. Shields shot back in the press, saying Cruise "should stick to fighting aliens and let mothers decide the best way to treat postpartum depression," alluding to War of the Worlds, the movie Cruise was promoting at the time.

He later apologized.

Cruise has custody of his two children from his second marriage to Nicole Kidman, which ended after nine years.

He also was married to actress Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990.
