USM Wants to Lease VA

If the Veteran's Administration goes through with its plans to close the Gulfport VA, the University of Southern Mississippi wants to lease the hospital.

University president, Dr. Shelby Thames, officially notified the VA of his intentions Monday.

4th District Congressman Gene Taylor says if the VA goes through with the plans to close the hospital, then USM would like the property through the enhanced lease program.

If the deal goes through, USM would get a 75 year lease for as low as one dollar per year. Part of the facility would be used for training through USM's nursing program.
