Red Snapper Season extended; Free fishing July 4th

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - Whether you're a seasoned angler, or just wanting to try, this is your week to be out on the water.

Wednesday, July 4th, is Free Fishing Day on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. That means anyone can sport fish without a license for that one day.

The state Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks will recognize the free fishing day on the Mississippi coastal waters of Jackson, Harrison, and Hancock counties.

More experienced fishermen will be happy to hear that red snapper season is being extended in Mississippi territorial waters by six days. The season will close July 17, 2012, at 12:01 a.m.

The six-day extension was issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service.
