WLOX Editorial: South MS addressing senior housing need

Posted: Updated:

Each day ten thousand Americans turn 65.  For the next 20 years as the baby boomer generation ages more and more senior housing will be needed. We are happy to report that in South Mississippi that need is already being addressed.

In Pascagoula an old high school has been transformed into senior housing offering 57 affordable apartments with full size kitchens and bedrooms.

In a few months the new Santa Maria will open its doors once again, offering 135 studio apartments and 74 one bedroom apartments. Hurricane Katrina forced the closing of the Santa Maria on the Beach.

Methodist Senior Services is building a new Seashore Highlands Campus north of Interstate-10 just off Cowan-Lorraine Road. This campus will have 30 duplex-style homes for active retirement living and 50 private suites for people needing assisted living. The project will also include something new to the coast called a Green House which will provide assisted living for those who may have memory or cognitive impairment.

It's heart warming to see such a wide variety of housing going on line specifically for our senior citizens.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
