GULFPORT, MS (AP) - A teenage murder suspect is facing a new charge in Gulfport. Monday afternoon, Diaz Easterling was charged with aggravated assault in a case unrelated to the Friday night shooting death of Jacoby Matthews, 19.
In that case, investigators believe the two men got into an argument during at a gathering at the Preservation Oaks beach park, just west of Highway 49. Authorities say during the argument, Easterling pulled out a gun and fired two shots. According to the coroner, the victim was struck in the head.
The latest charges against Easterling also involve a shooting. Investigators believe he fired at people standing in a yard in the Gaston Point neighborhood last month. None of those bullets hit anyone, but one gunshot pierced a car.
Easterling is currently being held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center.
