OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Nearly 40 years of sailboat racing to beautiful Horn Island is on display this weekend off the Ocean Springs coastline.

Twenty Seven high-speed catamaran sailboats took off from the Front Beach of Ocean Springs on Saturday morning for a drag-race past Point Cadet, down the Casino Row channel, around Deer Island and back to Ocean Springs Yacht Club.

These boats are extremely fast when compared to their conventional mono-hull sailboat counterparts, capable of speeds in excess of 20 knots as they balance with half the boat in the air.  In heavy wind and water their streamlined hull shapes can easily out-pace power boats.

The boats compete again on Sunday.  But, the course for the Sunday race hasn't yet been finalized.  The wind is expected to be lighter so a shortened course is anticipated.  Race time is at 11:00 am.
