Athletes Battle It Out At Special Olympics Games

More than 800 athletes have gathered at Keesler Air Force Base this weekend to compete in this year's Special Olympics games.

Wheelchair races and track events are just some of the games featured during the event. Each competitor is sponsored by two Keesler airmen.

This is the 18th year the state's Special Olympics games have been held at Keesler.

This year, a new program has been launched to draw in the help of more students.

"We have introduced in the last three months, a new program called SO Get Into It. The SO standing for Special Olympics. The program is geared toward the general population in middle schools, and high schools," said Helen Parish, Executive Director of Mississippi's Special Olympics.

This new program aims to teach students about volunteerism and acceptance, while spreading the word about Special Olympics in our schools.
