Hammond named USM Athletic Director

Southern Miss removed the interim tag and named Jeff Hammond its new Athletic Director on Wednesday.

The retired army major general will take over the job in a permanent role, after serving as Interim Athletic Director since January.

Hammond has reportedly received a 1-year contract.

Hammond, also a former Southern Miss quarterback, said today that he never pursued the interim job, nor the full-time position, but simply answered the call when called upon.

In an afternoon press conference, Hammond was introduced in Hattiesburg, where he voiced a desire to bring the Southern Miss community together behind common goals.

Hammond takes over following one of the most successful years in USM history.

The football team won a conference title, and the basketball team reach the NCAA Tournament.

Now, Hammond will face the challenge of attacking numerous budget issues, while guiding the Golden Eagles through an era of college athletics that has been dominated by conference re-alignment and constant change.
