GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A decision by Navy brass to close one gate to the Gulfport Seabee Base has upset some residents in a nearby neighborhood.
According to Public Affairs Officer Rob Mims, the Commission Road gate has been closed and will remain closed. He said the move was necessary due to budget cut backs in the security forces, and the fact that the gate did not comply with current security standards.
But that reasoning doesn't sit well with Long Beach resident Steven McCaleb, who said he and many other retirees depend on that gate for access to base services and facilities.
"It's a vital venue for us to be able to use that gate and not be able to go through Gaston Point, because Gaston Point is a neighborhood community," McCaleb said. "They don't want us to go through there and we really don't want to use their neighborhood to go to the Broad Avenue Gate. So that's the reason we want to keep the Commission Road gate open."
Base officials apologize for any inconvenience caused by the gate closing, but remind everyone there are still gates open at 28th Street, Pass Road, and the Main gate on Broad Avenue.
The Pass Road gate is open 24 hours, 7 days a week.
The Broad Avenue gate is open Monday-Friday 5 a.m. - 5 p.m. and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
The 28th Street gate is open Monday - Friday 5 a.m. - 5 p.m. Outbound traffic can pass through the gate until 7 p.m. And it's closed on weekends and federal holidays.
