A lot of attention lately has been given to South Mississippi's gaming industry. The Southern Gaming Summit brought hundreds of vendors, casino owners and operators from across the country to our community. It was good to hear that most analysts believe our casino industry has survived the recession and now is enjoying a period of slow growth.
Margaritaville will open in Biloxi next week. This is the first new casino to open on the coast since Hurricane Katrina. Just south of Margaritaville, you have the Isle which the Golden Nugget is buying and planning to do millions of dollars in renovations.
This week Rotate Black goes back before the gaming commission with an enhanced plan to bring a second casino to Gulfport. Other projects are in the preliminary stages in D'iberville and Biloxi. These new projects come as our gaming industry celebrates its 20th anniversary.
The first 20 years have been an overwhelming success with hundreds of millions of dollars being pumped into South Mississippi's economy, as well as bringing thousands of jobs to local residents.
Who knows what the next 10 or 20 years will bring? But if 2012 is a guide, there is still a lot of growth left in South Mississippi's casino industry.
