Dam Spews Water Over Pearl River Road

The heavy rains overnight caused a dam to break in Pearl River County that spewed out thousands of gallons of water.

The dam broke in Carriere about 7:30 last night.

Two families were evacuated as a safety precaution.

The heavy rain caused two sections of the dam to wash-out flooding the area near Dove Ridge Road with about two feet of water covering the road. Authorities say the dam held water for a ten acre private pond.

Members of the Carriere Volunteer Fire Department made sure no vehicles passed through.

The flooding also caused ten other families left their homes because of flash flooding in other parts of Pearl River County.

According to doppler radar, 5 to 8 inches of rain fell over Pearl River county yesterday.

The area northwest of Picayune received as much as ten inches of rain.
