PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

A Pascagoula police officer is being called a hero after saving a three-year-old. The little girl was swimming at the Pascagoula Point when she nearly drowned. It was one of two near drowning incidents over the weekend at the Point, and both incidents involved toddlers.

Officer Dale Gordon was patrolling the beach when he got the call for help.

"As I approached, I could see a child unresponsive, lying in the sand," Gordon said. "The tips of the fingers had turned blue, and the toes had turned blue, and the child's lips had turned blue."

Officer Gordon knew time was of the essence, so he got on his hands and knees and immediately began CPR.

"I lifted the back of the neck and began giving it mouth to mouth recitation. After a few minutes of CPR, I felt its chest and it started getting a big strong heart beat."

Once he felt a pulse, Officer Gordon said all he could do was thank God.

"Because, I knew the child had a fighting chance at the point."

The three-year-old was later rushed to the hospital. Gordon admits it was a high pressure situation, and he's just happy to report the little girl is alive and well.

"From what I have been told by family, the child is responsive, sitting up, smiling and it appears she is going to make a full recovery," said Gordon.

This police officer said he doesn't want to be hailed a hero.

"I look at myself as blessed by God to be able to do something to bring this child back to life."

Police said another child was also pulled from the water after nearly drowning at the Point.  A Moss Point man helped to save that girl's life.
