FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The history books came to life for some Northwest Rankin High School students. Four Freedom Riders visited the school on Friday.

Margaret Leonard, Hezekiah Watkins, Delores Williams and Bob Zellner began their visit with an uplifting Freedom song. After some music, the Civil Rights icons broke up into groups with the students. Each student had an opportunity to meet in breakout sessions with two of the Freedom Riders.

"Just hearing from them and hearing their stories it's just like it encourages me to stand for a difference and yes our state has come so far, but there is still racism there are still things that have to be done," said Northwest Rankin High School Senior Cole Putnam.

The high school students also created a walk through museum. The display shows various images from the Civil Rights era. Mug shots of many of the Freedom Riders are included in that exhibit.
