D'Iberville Man Charged With 17 Counts Of Animal Cruelty

A D'Iberville man is in custody in connection with a bizarre animal cruelty investigation.

Harrison County Deputies arrested 38 year old Charles Martell, Jr Saturday at his last known address in the 44 hundred block of Unicorn Lane in D'Iberville.

Deputies say it all started Wednesday when they responded to complaints of a foul odor coming from the home.

That's when they say they discovered three cats inside a locked shed, as well as, 13 other cats and one pig inside the house in very poor health, and covered in feces.

Deputies say the animals were left without food or water for more than two months.

Martell is charged with 17 counts of animal cruelty, as well as, having an excessive number of animals within city limits, and an additional charge of failing to inoculate felines against rabies.

The cats were taken to the Humane Society, where 14 were put to sleep, the pig was taken to the County Farm.

Martell is in the Harrison County Jail, on more than two thousand dollars bond.
