Southern Miss Will Name New Head Basketball Coach On Thursday

Ten months ago Larry Eustachy resigned as Iowa State head basketball coach. Tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. Southern Miss will hold a news conference and sources say Larry Eustachy will be introduced as the Golden Eagles new head basketball coach replacing James Green who stepped down with one regular season game remaining.

Eustachy left Iowa State with eight years remaining on a ten year deal. In 14 years of coaching he has 260 career wins with stints at Iowa State and Utah State.

He reportedly admitted he had an alcohol problem but has been sober for 10 months and was looking for a return to the coaching ranks. The 48-year-old Eustachy led Iowa State to 101 victories, two Big 12 Championships and reached the 2000 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. He was also named Coach of the Year twice.

Southern Miss sports information director would not confirm or deny that Eustachy would be named the Golden Eagles new head coach. He only said that the new coach would be introduced to the media at a news conference beginning at three at the M-Club Building on the campus of Southern Miss.

On Wednesday Kermit Davis, Jr. withdrew his name from the list of candidates. Middle Tennessee State came up with more money to keep Davis.

Reportedly, Southern Miss Athletic Director Richard Giannini narrowed a list of 60 applicants to six.
