Easter sunrise services bring families together

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Some families draped themselves in blankets.  Others donned spring jackets.  They all huddled together along the beachfront, to celebrate Easter at sunrise.

Sunrise services were held in Long Beach, Gulfport and Pascagoula.  One of the services in Gulfport included Cowan Road Baptist Church and Handsboro Baptist Church.  Each service started within minutes of the sun making a majestic appearance on the eastern horizon.

In Long Beach, hundreds of people gathered on the beach for that community's Easter sunrise service. Rev. LaRue Stephens of First Baptist Church says the interdenominational service started 20 years ago to help bring people of faith together. Every year an offering is taken up for a local food pantry to help the less fortunate.

Pope Benedict XVI in his Easter Sunday message has urged the Syrian regime to heed international calls to end bloodshed and commit to dialogue.

After celebrating Mass in St. Peter's Square, Benedict voiced hope that Easter's joy would comfort Christian communities suffering because of their faith.
