Mega lottery causes mega fever

SLIDELL, LA (WLOX) -

Editor's Note: Friday night's winning numbers were 2, 4, 23, 38, 46, Gold Megaball #23.

If you want to be a millionaire, then get in line. Louisiana retailers are being overrun by folks hoping to nab the lucky ticket that will win them more than half a billion dollars.

"We actually had jobs scheduled today, so we put them off for tomorrow," said Mike Potter who drove to Slidell all the way from Mobile, Alabama.

The gas stations nearest to the Louisiana line have lines of people wrapping around stores. The Mega Millions Jackpot hopefuls are dreaming of what they could do with all that money.

"We got family members that need help right now, and hopefully we'll hit it to help them," said Long Beach Resident Carolyn Mauffray.

"I'm a work man. I've been working since I was 17 years old. $540 million would change me and everybody in my life," said Potter.

"I'd share it with my friends, my family and help everybody get where they need to be, and live on the rest of it," said Pascagoula resident Daphne Collins

Never have six numbers mattered so much. The now $640 million pot is a new lottery record. While the odds of winning are probably as big as the jackpot itself, that hasn't stopped people from driving across states just to buy a ticket.

Each ticket costs one dollar. About half of that will go to state government services. Of the rest, about 35 percent will go to player prizes and about 15 percent will go to retailers.

However, it's that record grand prize that everyone has their eye on.

"Everybody wants to have a portion of the dream, a portion of being independent. Owning your own home, not having to get up and deal with a boss you don't like every day, just a little tiny sliver of that dream," said Biloxi resident Heather Langlands. Langlands has already won two lotteries, and hopes her third try, is a charm.

Ticket sales will continue up to 45 minutes before drawing, which is 10 PM on Friday. However, sale times could vary store to store.
