Abortion bills not far from becoming law

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

As abortion bills cross hurdles in the legislature advocates are breathing a sigh of relief.

"We think it's getting Mississippi on a pro life track," said Christi Chandler with the Pro Life America Network.

Chandler says the bills are a foundation. The first one to pass the house would require any doctor at an abortion clinic to be certified in obstetrics and gynecology and have privileges at a local hospital.

Those regulations alone could shut down the state's only abortion clinic in Jackson. Chandler says it may be a pro life bill, but it's protecting women more than anything.

"We want to make sure that we have doctors here that know what they're doing.we want to make sure doctors can care for women if they did have a problem," said Chandler.

The second bill would require physicians to search for a fetal heartbeat before performing an abortion and get written consent showing the mother is aware of her unborn child's heartbeat. The bill also defines an "unborn human individual" as "an individual organism of the species homo sapiens from fertilization until live birth."

"We're very happy. We feel like there needs to be some regulations on the clinic care," said Chandler.

Those opposing the legislation say it's an insult to Mississippi voters who voted down the controversial Amendment 26 initiative regarding personhood last November.

An effort to put personhood back on the ballot is already underway since a piece of personhood legislation failed to gain traction at the capitol. Meantime, those abortion bills now sit with the senate,  just a few steps away from becoming law.

There's also another piece of legislation currently pending in the house, which would require physicians to be present when women take abortion-inducing drugs as well as require physicians to perform more follow up visits.
