Home improvement vendors try to persuade buyers

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - On Sunday, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coast Coliseum was the place to be for people hoping to renovate.

South Mississippi Home Builders Association held to the 25th Annual Home Show.

Plumbing, lighting, tiling. Just about anything you need to spruce up your house was all there at your fingertips.

Bailey Lumber and Supply was one of the close to 90 businesses, hoping to wow potential buyers who walked by.

"There were a lot of people who came through here and got a lot of information about our cabinets that we sell, true wood cabinets. As well as, pinnacle shingles or hardy siding. They're wanting to know how much is going to cost them to build houses," Paul Boudreaux said.

Gus Gamboa of Floor Co. in Gulfport also took advantage of the big crowds.

"Its been great. A lot of walk-ins, a lot of people walking by. We've had about 200 leads, so it's been pretty good and hopefully we get some sales from it."

For home themed businesses, an expo like this is the ideal location to get sales. However, given the state of the economy, a lot of homeowners are left wondering how they will pay the mortgage. That begs the question: How many people could really consider renovating or building new houses right now?

"I think this gives people some perspective and some hope. They see what there is and if they're not doing anything right now, they can see what they can be doing in the future. One thing you don't want to do when you're remodeling, updating or even building from scratch is, you do not want to jump into it all at one time. That's something that takes planning and this would be a great place to start,"Event chair, Deborah Migues said.

"What people are realizing is that the economy is turning around, a little bit slowly right now. But, right now is the cheapest time to build that I've seen in history. Labor is cheap, material is cheap and it's only because of supply and demand" Boudreaux said.
