TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Pima County Health Department is distributing free car seats to low-income families.

The Governor's Office of Highway Safety provided the county with $5,200 to buy the car seats. They come with materials for safe installation and safety education.

The health department's Public Health Nursing offices are distributing the seats.

Interested parents can call for an appointment:

East office: 6920 E. Broadway Boulevard (520)298-3888

North office: 3550 N. 1st Avenue (520)243-2850

South office: 175 W. Irvington Road (520)889-9543

The department cautions against some of the most common mistakes made with child safety seats, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA):

  1. Not using the proper child safety seat for a child's size and age
  2. Not placing the child safety seat in the correct direction in the vehicle
  3. Incorrect installation of the child safety seat in relation to the vehicle's air bags.
