GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) -

He's a police officer by day, and a singer/songwriter by night. Now Gautier Detective Matt Hoggatt may have a new title, perhaps "Prince of the Parrotheads?"

Hoggatt recently won first place at the American Songwriters Lyric Contest with his song "Dear Jimmy Buffett." Hoggatt calls his song an open letter to one of his idols.

Winning the contest brought more than just bragging rights. It earned him a coveted invitation to play with Jimmy Buffett himself.

The legend and the lawman both hail from Jackson County, and Hoggat says he's always been inspired by Buffett.

Saturday in Birmingham, Hoggatt performed alongside Buffett who answered "Dear Jimmy Buffett" with his own "Dear Matt Hoggatt." Click here to watch the entire video of the Birmingham performance.

Tuesday, Hoggatt heads to Tallahassee for another turn on stage with Jimmy Buffett.
