Hicks To Retire At End Of Year

Carlos Hicks, superintendent of Gulfport schools for the past 10 years, will retire at the end of the year. The 57 year old Hicks made the announcement at a school board meeting.

``It has always been my thought that a school district is best served when the superintendent leaves before people want him or her to,'' Hicks said. ``I have often told people that I have the best job in America, and I truly believe that. Our working relationship with the board and the support we have received from the community is outstanding.''

Hicks was chosen to succeed Ray Strebeck in 1994.
