Port of Pascagoula dredging project moving forward

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - The Port of Pascagoula has signed a $5.5 million agreement with the Army Corps of Engineers to dredge their current material disposal site.

The site, which is north of Ingalls Shipbuilding, is almost full, according to Port Director Mark McAndrews. A contractor will be hired to dig out the dredge material and put it on dikes.

McAndrews said this is the first of two agreements the port hopes to make with the corps regarding their dredge material disposal. He hopes to sign another agreement in the next few months.

Once both projects are complete the site will be usable for the next 20 to 25 years.

The Army Corps of Engineers hopes to hire a contractor by April 1, and the project is expected to take anywhere from 12 to 15 months to complete.
