BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Don and Dot Messer of Biloxi truly understand that marriage is a life long commitment. On Valentine's Day, we featured this delightful couple who know what long term commitment and dedication to one another really means.
Don and Dot have been married for 70 years. When asked about when they got married, Don was quick with a reply.
"It was December 28th, 1941," he told us with a twinkle in his eye.
They had met only a few months earlier, but Dot's woman's intuition told her he was the guy.
She confessed she liked Don from that very first day she set eyes upon him.
Don was a photographer with his own studio. During our interview, they revealed a little secret that even their children did not know about until this day.
"We had been smooching in my studio," Don chuckled. "It was always after hours, and we kept the front door locked," he said as his bride of 70 years looked on and just shook her head.
Dot and Don have children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. You could say the years have been kind to these fine folks.
In their early 90's now, neither Dot or Don needs a wheelchair, cane or walker.
Spend any time around their Biloxi neighborhood, and you just might see Dot riding around on her tricycle.
Both are also tech savvy. Don even has his own Facebook page.
"He uses that computer a lot more than I do," Dot said. "But we both have one, he just stays on his more than me because of my eyesight."
In case you were wondering how many arguments they had in their 70 years as husband and wife, the answer might surprise you.
"Just one," Don said, and he added that they got over it in no time. In fact, it was so long ago, that both Don and Dot forget what it involved.
Dot spent her career in the travel industry but is also a very talented artist. Her beautiful art work fills the walls of their daughter's Biloxi home.
For this delightful couple, the past 70 years have not just been about love but also fun. They enjoy one another and enjoy all that life brings their way.
Before we ended our interview, we had to ask what the secret is to 70 years of wedded bliss. Both said it is all about respecting your spouse and giving them not just your love but your trust as well.
