BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -
Mardi Gras is a busy day for the Biloxi Police Department, which has to monitor the parade, traffic and thousands of screaming carnival goers.
While good times may be rolling, there are still some rules to follow.
"We want to inform everybody, please park in only legal parking spaces. Be careful parking near any railroad tracks. Don't block any rail road tracks," said Sgt. Jackie Rhodes of the Biloxi Police Department.
Orange fencing has popped up around the median on Highway 90. It shows clearly where parking is not allowed. There are also a few things you can't take into the parade zone. No glass containers or animals are allowed.
However, a good dose of patience is always a good thing to have on hand, especially as traffic backs up when the celebration is over.
"We usually end up having three or four accidents when the parade is over with everybody trying to get out of town. So, please slow down, take your time," said Rhodes.
Another big issue at Mardi Gras is drinking. Police said spectators will arrive early and often drink all day long. Officers ask that anyone drinking have a designated driver close by.
Also, when scrambling to catch beads police said to be cautious of the floats, and to be kind to your neighbor.
"People fight over beads. Don't do that. It's a family thing. We don't need to run over any kids to get to a bead," said Rhodes.
Police will begin to shut down roads for the parade route about an hour before the parade rolls.
The Gulf Coast Carnival Association's parade will roll at 1 p.m. on Fat Tuesday. Click here for a parade route and info.
