Over 100 Heidelberg High students suspended

JASPER COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Heidelberg's mayor called a special community meeting Wednesday evening, after the school board and the superintendent suspended over 100 high school students for a December protest over the dismissal of a principal.

Heidelberg Mayor Juan Barnett says Superintendent Gwendolyn Page suspended students for one day Wednesday, but the punishment also includes no extra curricular activities for the rest of the year. Back in December, the students protested the forced resignation of Principal Perry Reed.

"This is done in retaliation to our students because they stood up and they protested the fact that our school district had at lease five to six principles in the last five years and currently we are on our second principle this school year," said Barnett. "I feel like this a disregard for our children. I feel like the school board nor the superintendent has heard any of the cries from our students and I don't think they have heard any cries from our community."

Mayor Barnett says the punishment will prevent several students from becoming Mississippi scholars. Plus, five or six basketball players will be prohibited from state championship play.
