OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -
Meet two year old Zoe Mayers, a typically active child. But something about her is not so typical. The scratches and bite marks on her arm from a rooster attack.
Her mother, Sarah Fountain, is upset.
"I'm furious, furious," Fountain said.
The attack led to a police report being filed, an emergency room visit for Zoe and a big bill on the way. Sarah doesn't plan on paying it.
"I pick up the invoice on Thursday from the hospital, and I'm taking it to city hall. I have told them they are responsible for that bill," Fountain said.
The roosters were picked up after the incident and are now being held at a city veterinary clinic. City officials were concerned they could interfere with a Mardi Gras parade.
Another reason Sarah Fountain is upset about what happened, she feels city officials she talked to are not taking this situation seriously, that it's really nothing more than just a joke.
"It's OK because it's a rooster, and she got a little scratch on her arm, a little mark on her arm. It's not that big of a deal," Fountain said. "Well, it is because eventually somebody's going to get hurt."
The alderman who represents downtown, Chic Cody, agrees.
"This is the seventh incident that I personally know of, so it's time to do something," Cody said. "I'm not saying they have to go, but I'm saying they should be probably caged and protected from children."
The family is not going to give up until the roosters are off the streets for good, even posting an anti-rooster Facebook Page.
Robert Mayers is Zoe's father.
"We're here to stand up and let people know that we're not going to stand for it," Mayers said. "Yeah they're cute; they're fun to look at, but they're not where they should be.
The family said they probably won't take legal action against the city, but they are not ruling out that possibility. Meanwhile, Ocean Springs Mayor Connie Moran, a supporter of the free roaming roosters, declined our request for an interview.
