OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -
If you stop by Sekul's Art Gallery on Government Street in Ocean Springs, you'll see art that represents an artistic adventure. The pieces are part of a collection titled Dauphin Island Experience.
What happens when a group of artists spend a week on Alabama's Dauphin Island? Art, inspired by nature comes to life.
"We rented a house right on the beach. It was gorgeous. We created all day, from the moment we finished breakfast until it was time to go to sleep," said Artist Kim Bailey.
Bailey and other South Mississippi artists have created a body of work called Dauphin Island Experience. The result is on display at Sekul's Art Gallery in Ocean Springs.
Paintings, pottery, jewelry and more came out of this unique opportunity to be inspired by natural beauty.
Potter and furniture maker Shane Sekul said it was an ideal environmental.
"Just to see nature like that. Being at peace with it and hearing the waves crash on the beach and see the birds flying, it was serendipitous. We fed off of each other and did a lot of walking on the island."
A lot of the art that was produced during that week on Dauphin Island is interpretative in nature. Other pieces captured real life on the island.
"This is the Dauphin Island pier which used to be a fishing pier. After the hurricanes there's no longer water under the pier," Bailey said standing by one of her paintings.
Sekul's Art Gallery is filled with colorful images from an artistic adventure, a spiritual experience on Dauphin Island.
