GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - You're sure to see a lot of festive colors around town, as organizations throughout South Mississippi prepare for Mardi Gras celebrations.
Floyd Babin and the Krewe of Unpredictables are a perfect example. They are already adding the finishing touches to one of the many decorative floats that will be featured in the upcoming Lizana Mardi Gras parade.
"This is actually our fourth float since Katrina. We've had the 18-wheeler. And we've downsized, so we can pull it with my truck. It just takes a lot. It takes a good bit of time, a lot of effort," Babin said.
The 10 by 30 foot handmade structure is the result of days of hard work. The freshly painted decorations are just adding to the goal of letting the good times roll.
"A lot of family fun, having a good time. We have a lot of food and just family, just family. That's what Lizana parade is, which we started nine years ago which will pass right here in front of my house," Babin said.
Over in Biloxi, the Second Liners Mardi Gras Club is also hard at work. Last year they were slowed down by a little rain, but this year they're at it again.
"Our 2012 parade will be Saturday, February 11th, starting here at the corner of Division and Nichols Drive. You can look forward to the street dancing. Second lining is a form of street dancing, with the Bay City Brass Band that's normally in our parades. Everybody can join in and look out for our signature beads this year," Second Liners member, Pinky Lewis said.
So when choosing which parade to go to, don't limit yourself to just one city. Even the people planning their own parades plan on partying it up with others.
"We do Lizana. We're going to do D'Iberville for the first time this year, Long Beach, Waveland. We're just going to make it all fun," Babin said.
And remember: Laissez les bon temps roulez.
The 9th Annual Lizana Parade is scheduled for February 5, while the Second Liners will host its parade on February 11.
