18 pastors named Drum Majors for Justice

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The Gulfport NAACP is honoring local pastors who have gone above and beyond to serve their community. At a luncheon Friday, 18 ministers were named Drum Majors for Justice.

A drum major for justice is an idea put forth by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It's a title for some one who puts others first, and works to promote equality for all.

"Well, you have to be special. You have to do things outstanding," said Joel Birdsong, NAACP Vice-President said. "We know all pastors lead their flock, but you have to get out in the community and do exceptional things with the community like education, telling them how to be a good citizen, as far as helping the needy and homeless."

This was the first Drum Majors for Justice awards handed out by the Gulfport chapter. They hope to continue the awards for many years.
