ST. MARTIN, MS (WLOX) - There was a building frenzy Friday at St. Martin Middle School. Thirty-three gifted sixth graders took on a 45 minute block build contest.
Each student was given 100 lego blocks, a piece of string, aluminum foil and a rock. From there, the sky was the limit. There was only one rule: Everyone had to build some type of building. When 45 minutes passed, all students were judged on their work.
The National Association of Women in Construction puts on the event. They say it's important students learn what contracting work is.
"Basically we want to make sure they think of construction," said Brandy Hamilton. "It's a vital part of our economic stability. We have to make sure the industry grows. If we don't, they don't become interested in it, and this gets them thinking. We ask them what they want to be when they grow up and whenever they say, 'Oh I want to be a contractor' you know, it's high fives all around."
There is a chance for winners to advance to higher competition. This is the fifth year the group has worked closely with St. Martin Middle School to host the event.
