GREENE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - On Friday morning, grieving family members will somehow try to say goodbye to a 15-year-old they loved so much. The funeral for Kodi Henderson begins at 10:00. Henderson and three other teens lost their lives in a horrible Wednesday morning accident.
Henderson, Dillon Reid, and Steven Nicholson all died at the scene. WLOX News has learned Joseph Lister was taken off life support Thursday afternoon. Authorities confirmed the 17-year-old died a short time later.
His death just adds to the pain being felt at Greene County High. Instead of going to class, hundreds of students gathered in the school's gym Thursday morning for a memorial service. They came to console each other, and remember the friends who died and were injured Wednesday in a one car accident.
A local pastor prayed for the kids and told them that it is okay to cry and grieve for their friends. The principal had similar words of sympathy.
"We will get through this together. This is the time to come together and mourn together," Greene County High School Principal Scott Bray said.
Two of the victims were members of the Greene County football team. Reid and Henderson both suited up for the Wildcats during the 2011 season.
New details are beginning to emerge about what happened Wednesday morning. The Mississippi Highway Patrol tells WLOX News five students decided to go hunting that morning rather than to school. Wednesday was the last day of deer hunting season with guns. And Greene County is one of the state's most fertile deer hunting grounds.
At about 8:30 Wednesday morning, the pick up truck left Bushy Creek Road. A highway patrol spokesman confirmed nobody in the truck was wearing a seat belt.
Bushy Creek Road is about five miles south of Leakesville.
According to the Highway Patrol, 16-year-old Dillon Reid, 15-year-old Steven Nicholson, and 15-year-old Kodi Henderson all died instantly.
Their 17-year-old friends Russell Green and Joseph Lister were taken to USA Medical Center. Green is recovering from his injuries.
Shortly after school leaders realized they lost these students, the flag outside Greene County High School was lowered to half staff.
"We are certainly doing everything we need to console our students and families of those involved in wreck," said Bray.
A wake for Kodi Everette Henderson will be held Thursday night from 6:00-9:00 at Freeman Funeral Home in Citronelle. Henderson's funeral service is Friday morning at 10:00 at Bethel Baptist Church in Citronelle. Interment will be in Bethel Cemetery.
