Vancleave rescue team helps save starved, neglected horses

VANCLEAVE, MS (WLOX) -

Four starved and neglected horse are getting a second chance at life thanks to some Vancleave animal lovers. The thoroughbreds were seized along with 55 others in Louisiana.

Sunshine Horses 2nd Chance Volunteers from Vancleave said they were shocked when they trekked to Many, Louisiana last week to help rescue dozens of neglected horses.

"It sent chills all over my body," Lanie McCall said.

That's because the animal lovers said they were confronted with horse that didn't make it. They said some of the horses had bad eye infections and were extremely thin, dying of starvation.

"They were neglected. And basically the trainer that was out there stated he didn't see anything wrong with the horses," Rojas said.

Shannon Rojas and Lanie McCall said that's when they loaded up four sick horses and drove them to their Vancleave barn to give them lots of tender, loving care. For a year now, these women said they have been helping horses like these that have been abandon, abused or just given up by their owners.

"When we first got them here, they wouldn't come to us. We couldn't touch them. And they were so scared of people," Rojas said about the horses. "I think it is important to make a difference in these animals' lives."

This Vancleave volunteer group said providing TLC for the horses costs a lot of money. They said they're spending hundreds of dollars a week to feed and care for the animals. They are now hoping generous South Mississippians will help provide money and hope to these horses.

"Somebody needs to, somebody needs to care. They are living, breathing to me and they're not much different from human beings."

Until more help comes, the Vancleave volunteers pray their helping hand is enough to get these horses back healthy and happy again. The volunteers are now working with The Horse Rescue Association in Louisiana to get more sick thoroughbreds to the coast this month.
