The Harrison County Sheriff's Department is now "on line" with the new countywide radio system.
The department switched over to the new communications system at six o'clock Thursday morning.
It features touch screen technology and the latest computer equipment. The county's new radio dispatch center is located at the jail.
Along with dispatching sheriff's deputies, the new radio system will also handle calls for D'Iberville and the county's volunteer fire stations.
"By the end of March, we'll have all the cities on board. We'll be able to communicate directly, car to car to anybody in public safety here in Harrison County. This will help the quality of life for everybody in Harrison County," said Sheriff George Payne.
The City of Gulfport is already using the new radio system. Biloxi, Long Beach and Pass Christian will be switching over in the next few weeks.
