A Morgantown teen died Monday after he and a friend set off what may have been a box of old explosives, Marion County Coroner Norma Williamson said.
Marshall McLeod, 16, was transported to Marion County Hospital Monday morning, where he died, Williamson said.
McLeod and an unidentified friend were firing a weapon at the box near the shed of an abandoned house, Williamson said. The box exploded and fatally wounded McLeod, she said. The condition of the friend was not immediately known.
Williamson said authorities believe the box contained old dynamite.
"They were just playing around, target shooting,'' Williamson said. "They were doing what boys do.''
Marion County Sheriff's deputies were investigating the scene late Monday afternoon and could not be reached for comment. Williamson said an autopsy would be performed on McLeod Monday night in Jackson.
