"It's like a little chunk of the French Quarter moved to Biloxi. We wanted to do a restaurant outside of New Orleans with the idea of growing even more," Gumbo Shop President, Richard Stewart said.
And so a second Gumbo Shop was born in Biloxi. Richard knows how popular the Mississippi Gulf Coast is for New Orleans natives.
"We have lots of New Orleans ex-patriots living in the area, not just Biloxi, but from Pass Christian all the way over to Ocean Springs."
Richard, had an ace up his sleeve for a general manager.
"One of the other big reasons we did one here is because Gaylin was our assistant general manager in New Orleans, and he agreed to move here. So we knew it would be well run."
General Manager Gaylin McAllister has family in the area, so it was an easy decision to move.
"The thing I like most of all is probably when I come into work. Coming into work along the beach road, it's a lot different from coming into work and going to the French Quarter."
As for the food, it's the same food you'll find in the New Orleans Gumbo Shop. Gaylin likes to try all the food, but he does have a favorite.
"Probably my favorite thing here is the combination plate, you get three items on one plate. You get the red beans and rice, shrimp creole and jambalaya on one plate."
Another very popular dish is the crawfish and tasso pasta. It's filled with flavor. The base is a New Orleans cream sauce added to crawfish tails, green onions and tasso pasta.
Richard sums up the dining experience.
"We're kind of between casual dining and fine dining. We're more of a casual dining price with a fine dining atmosphere, and it's high quality."
