New hospital replacing Gulf Coast Medical Center

In the Biloxi Commerce Park, off Cedar Lake Road, 36 acres of land will soon be home to the future of Biloxi healthcare.  A new hospital will be built to replace the Gulf Coast Medical Center, which was heavily damaged during Katrina.

"Given the age of the facility, the cost of repairs and the migration of Harrison County residents north of I-10, it simply did not make sense to operate the hospital in its old location inside the flood plain and tidal surge line," said Health Management Associates District 4 President Joe Pinion.

Health Management bought the Gulf Coast Medical Center in 2006, and the facility was officially closed in 2008.

The land for the new location, which is just south of I-10, was actually purchased by physicians years ago.  Their dream was to one day build a new hospital that would serve North Biloxi.

"This is the beginning of the end of our dream so, we're excited about having a hospital in this part because it will serve the area," said plastic surgeon Dr. Strawford H. Dees III

The hospital will be run by HMA, which is also the parent company of Biloxi Regional Hospital.  Officials believe the two sister facilities will complement each other. "This will enhance I believe the services there. It allows us to share staff and for us to work together on quality programs that we already have at Biloxi Regional," said Pinion.

Biloxi officials are also excited about the job creation that will occur both during construction, and after the hospital is operational.  "This is going to create a lot of jobs. Hospital is heavy employment center there. It's good pay so, it's going to make a lot of businesses happy," said Biloxi Mayor A.J. Holloway.

HMA has sent a letter of intent to the State Department of Health.  Officials hope to have the new facility built by June of 2014.
