D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - The speedy economic growth in cities like D'Iberville has helped put Mississippi on the map when it comes to attracting companies. A recent article by Area Development magazine listed Mississippi amongst the top 10 states to do business in.
Economic Development Director Jeff Taylor looked through old maps of D'iberville, reflecting on how far the city has come.
"It is a location thing," Taylor said. "We are not only easy to work with, everyone can be easy to work with, but if you're not in the right location it doesn't matter. Again we can't take credit for anything, but the fact that we have a great location and we're maximizing it and trying to do it complimentary to what the rest of the coast, how the rest of the coast is trying to market itself."
A clear plan and willingness to cooperate is part of what's got new businesses flocking to the area.
"We're wrapped around trying to build back what we had and take advantage of our strategic location and be as friendly as we can, and knock down some of the rules that seem to be in the way and work with the developer."
The success is appreciated, but the city is just as concerned about smaller and older businesses.
"The other quadrants of the interstate will begin to fill in as we work on our housing downtown, that will bring folks in. It will help ma and pop businesses. Not everything has to be a big box retail."
Though the city's accomplishment certainly helped put the rest of the state on the map, Jeff Taylor said D'Iberville is just one piece of the big puzzle.
"The lick that the coast took during Katrina, it could have knocked a lot of people down. And every town has done a great job of coming back."
The city hopes to bring in even more businesses. There are also plans start work on new housing developments
