WIGGINS, MS (WLOX) - Puppies that were abandoned along the roadside in Stone County, will soon have loving homes in South Florida.
Wednesday afternoon some animal lovers in Stone County loaded 25 puppies in a van bound for a "no kill" animal shelter in Ft. Lauderdale. The group hopes to make this "rescue effort" a monthly event.
The adorable puppies, dumped along roadsides in the country, are getting a second chance, thanks to the efforts of the Stone County SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
"We are transporting 25 puppies to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where they have a waiting list," said Katie Stonnington.
A growing number of volunteers helped rescue these abandoned animals and provided them with loving, temporary homes.
"Most of them have fostered these animals since they were tiny puppies. Fed them, bathed them and gave them medications," said the leader of the SPCA.
"Very upsetting to me. Because we've had numerous animals dumped out by our house," said animal lover Richard Craven.
He has helped rescue several abandoned animals from rural ditches, including black lab puppies that someone dumped near his home just a few weeks ago.
"People take and dump small animals out in the country. And they basically give them a death sentence," said Craven.
"Kind of a passion of mine. I've been a dog lover since I was a kid," said a smiling Nita Henke.
She volunteered to make the 14 hour drive to South Florida and says donating her time is a small sacrifice to help reach the goal of finding good homes for these puppies.
"That's absolutely the goal. There's probably kids out there that can't wait to have a little puppy of their own to love. And I think it's going to be a good, good thing," said Henke.
This is the first time the Stone County SPCA has organized a puppy transport rescue on its own.
"Helps make up for finding them alongside the road," said Stonnington.
The group would like to open its own animal shelter in Stone County. They're still in the process of fund raising and looking for land, before that goal can be accomplished.
