STARKVILLE, MS (WLOX) -

Mississippi State rallied and on the last play of the game and the Bulldogs had a chance to force overtime, but Auburn safety Ryan Smith chopped down quarterback Chris Relf, who fell head first, inches from the goal line.

Coach Dan Mullen says that's water under the bridge, it's time to move on and take on an even stronger Tigers team.

Mullen said, "You can't do anything to change that game that happened. There's nothing that happened that's ever going to change the outcome of that football game. So you have to play another one in a couple of days so we had to put that one away and start getting ready right away for an even a tougher opponent this week."

LSU polished off Northwestern State 49 to 3. The Tigers used both quarterbacks Jarrett Lee and Zach Metternberger who passed at will. LSU's ground attack also excelled behind Spencer Ware and Michael Ford.

The Bulldogs defense must stop the run and force the Tigers to pass.

LSU has dominated the series having won 11 straight games over Mississippi State, but the Bulldogs have been closing the gap.

LSU wide receiver Reuben Randle said, "Last two seasons the games I've been in have been close. This is an SEC opponent and every week no matter how many years you have beaten them. this is a different year.

Tigers coach Les Miles complimented Mullen saying, "Anytime you get into year two or three of a program it's one of those things of teaching and I think they are playing much better."@

The Tigers defense will key on Bulldogs running back Vick Ballard of Pascagoula who has rushed over 300 yards with 4 touchdowns in two games and use the big play capabilities of quarterback Chris Relf.

Tyrann Mathieu, LSU's sophomore defensive back said, " I think we'll put our speed onto the field and let our cover corners do their job and get after those guys, try to rattle those guys early.

Mullen stated, "We're expecting a great excited crowd, It will be fun to play a football game back home again and get ready to go play."

LSU has won 18 of the last 19 games against Mississippi State.
