PEARL RIVER COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has lifted and advisory against water contact and fish consumption on a portion of the Pearl River.
The river has been under advisory since the beginning of August after residents reported a massive fish kill in the river from Louisiana, all the way to Picayune. The dead marine life was traced back to a paper mill in Bogalusa, Louisiana.
A massive clean-up effort has been going on for weeks. Tuesday, MDEQ announced that the area of the river that extends from Highway 26 to Interstate 59 is now safe for human contact. Officials also said the seafood caught in the water is safe to eat.
