OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - History is on display at the new Ocean Springs Fire Department. Monday, a 6-foot steel beam from the World Trade Center was dedicated to honor the firefighters and other emergency responders who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Ocean Springs Fire Department was chosen to receive the artifact after a two year application process. Firefighters from that department were among those who went to New York to assist after the 9/11 attacks.
Last month, Ocean Springs Fire Chief Jeff Ponson, Deputy Chief Nate Wilson, and Lt. David Wicker traveled to New York to retrieve the beam and transport it to its new home in Ocean Springs. The new fire station is scheduled to open in about a month.
Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood and Mayor Connie Moran were among the speakers at Monday's event. David Elliott was also there and will have more on the solemn ceremony later today on WLOX News and WLOX.com.
